A very early french petzval optical design lens engraved. De 1840 à 1856 Contremaitre des ateliers de Mr LEREBOURS. Mr Vallantin is known to have been overseer for Lerebours (from 1840 to 1856) before to create his own brand of lenses. Vallantin lenses are sought after for their high optical quality.
This antique lens is from circa 1860, a petzval design with one cemented achromat on front, and separated by air achromat on rear. One of the glasses is handwriten "Vallantin". As primitive lens, there is not waterhouse slot, but a washer stop behind front achromat. Easy to fit your own cardboard stops (see picture 7 & 8). The rack & pinion focusing system works as it should.
Brass barrel is in used condition with signs of age. There is a chip on the edge of meniscus glass on rear achromat (see picture11, could be easily covered with India ink to avoid reflections). Diameter at mounting thread: 73mm. An historical piece of french photography, a must have for collectors and ready to take amazing pictures for wet plate enthusiasts.
