Ultra rare lens in this model and focal length, "Hermagis Extra Rapide pour Portraits n°4" has an aperture of f3.3 for focal length 285mm. This one is from 1910. At that time, Hermagis keeps 3 series of portrait lenses. "Rapide pour Portrait" for general purpose in photographer studio."Extra Rapide pour Portraits" for fast working at any seasons. "Eidoscope" for soft focus rendering in portrait photography. This Extra Rapide n°4 for sale is the rarest serie and really hard to find in that large FL. Don't forget the N°6 in the same serie was the fastest lens of this era, direct challenger of Dallmeyer 2C. As petzval optical design, if you use 8x10 camera, center of plate is very sharp, and borders have swirly bokeh effect. In nice used condition, brass barrel wears some marks due to age.
There is a Waterhouse slot (not waterstop included). Glasses are in very good condition, no chip, no major scratch, of course few markins and dust. The rear achromat is complete (two glasses separated by air).Glasses are pencil handwritten "Hermagis à Paris" and serial. Rack and pinion focusing system works as it should. Mounting flange is included, not the Hermagis genuine one but do the job! Diamter at mounting thread: 102mm. External diameter of flange: 130mm. Weigth with flange: 1,9kg. Definitively a beautiful lens, part of historical French photography, for large format photographers and wet plat enthusiasts. Check out my other antique lenses for sale.
