An antique french lens engraved. Darlot Successeur Opticien Brevete Sans Garantie du Gouvernement. This early petzval made by Darlot is from circa 1864, with a low serial number (299). The front and rear lens groups are engraved on ring "Portrait A" and "Portrait B". Used like this, you have a classic portrait lens with an estimated focal length of 200mm covering 5x7in.
But you can use each lens separately (screwed on rear group) for wiew and landscape photography. The iris wheel turns as it should, and a screw allows the iris device to slide inside barrel, increasing soft focus effect. A very interesting tool for collectors and artistic photographers.Brass barrel wears a lot of varnish loss and the engraved parts are not so easy to read. Glasses are in good condition and complete. Achromat is handwritten "Darlot" on the edge. Original leather front cap is included (in poor condition). An aluminium mounting flange is included, not genuine but do the job! Definitively a rare and very early lens, a part of historical French photography, ready to shoot beautiful wet plates or analogic films.
